Mid Year New Goals

By Dakota Stanley

Who says that you can only start a new goal on January first? Why not start a new goal on a Thursday afternoon in July? I have been tossing around the idea of starting a book blog for a long time. But, I always talk myself out of it. With thoughts like, “Who wants to read my take on the book I just finished” or “You don’t read enough different kinds of books”. But as of today I have decided to just go for it. What do I have to lose? As someone who wont go anywhere without her emotion support kindle, and a pair of headphones to listen to an audio book, why not give this a shot!

I grew up in small town South Dakota, a ranch community where we didn’t even have school on Friday’s so that kids could back out the ranch for the weekends. I was an avid reader as a kid. You knew the kind, reading beyond their grade level, loved the Accelerated Reader program, and would rather go to the library then gym class. The school had a good enough library to keep me well stocked in books, and my parents would buy me books in the series’ that I obsessed over. At some point when I was in upper elementary school or middle school a family friend opened a bookstore in town. Now that was magic. I would beg my parents to give me extra chores to earn extra money and go in to town and buy books. Since she knew me well, (though she probably would have gotten to know me anyways..) she would make sure to order the next book in the series I was hooked on at the time. She would recommend books she thought I would like, and let me hang out in the store as my dad ran his errands. We weren’t a ranching family, so on the weekends when all my friends were out on their ranches working I would build a fort in my bedroom and hide away, reading nonstop until I had to go back to school Monday morning. Have I painted that picture clearly enough? Then we enter high school, and I discovered boys and video games and quickly their didn’t seem to be enough time for reading. I still read occasionally, (I grew up in the era of Twilight and the Hunger Games, so naturally I was obsessed with both of those). But never to the extreme I did when I was younger. Enter college and reading is completely off the table unless it was for class, and even then I still struggled. Life carried on that way until this last year. This year I will turn 30, and one of the goals I set myself for the new year was to use the Kindle my husband let me buy on Black Friday, and to read 25 books during 2025. Well as I sit here today in July 2025, I have finished 36 books. Not only did this goal get me into the habit of reading again, but even better it reignited my love of reading. Now my kindle travels with me everywhere I go, because what if there is an opportunity to read? And I listen to audio books while I work, or do chores around the house.

So that brings up back to today, and deciding to try and write content about the books I read, the ones I love and the ones I DNF, and every book in between. If you’ve made it this far, thank you! Hopefully you stop back by and see what opinions I have to share.

In the future I hope to build myself a beautiful library to spend all my free time in, but for now I will just keep staring a photos like this and dreaming of the day.
